We know you have questions, but aren't sure who or how to ask them or maybe you are just to embarrassed to ask.  That is why we have created this page.  Use the form below to submit your question and we will do our best to answer those questions on this page and on social media.  All questions that are submitted are completely anonymous.  We will answer questions related to relationships, sex, your body, your health and when you might need to seek treatment for certain types of infections.

Q: Is it okay to have sex on your period? 

A: Yes, it is okay to have sex on your period. However, having sex on your period does not prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or pregnancy. If you are wearing a tampon make sure to take it out before sex and if sex becomes uncomfortable or painful, stop.

 Q: How old do you have to be to get tested for an STI?

A: If you are having sex and are having symptoms of an STI, you can talk to your medical care provider or pediatrician at any age. However, at Siouxland District Health you have to be at least 14 years old to get tested but all STI services are free and you do not need a parent with you to get tested or receive treatment. 

 Q: Is there free STI testing in every city? 

A: We have free testing here at Siouxland District Health Department in Sioux City, IA. If you are in another city, check with your local public health department and they should be able to let you know if they offer free testing or can point you in the right direction for free testing.  

 Q: Is STI testing 100% confidential? 

A: All testing done at Siouxland District Health Department is HIPAA protected. This means it is 100% confidential and we cannot legally share any of your information with anyone else. 

 Q: How Irregular does a period need to be to need to see a doctor? 

A: Having irregular periods does not mean there is a health issue going on with you. Weight gain, weight loss, pregnancy, and multiple other factors can cause irregular periods. If you are concerned about having irregular periods, you should see your medical provider or an OBGYN which specializes in female health.  

Q: If you are uncircumcised is it like having a built-in condom? 

A: No, everyone having sex should use condoms to prevent STIs, including both circumcised and uncircumcised people. You can get male and female condoms free here at Siouxland District Health Department. 

Q: Why do condoms break? 

A: Condoms are your best method in preventing an STI and generally they do not break. If they do, it is generally because of improper use. 

Q: What is a chancre? 

A: A chancre is the first sign of a Syphilis infection. It is an STI (sexually transmitted infection), and normally people may not know that they have it because they do not cause any pain or discomfort. They are normally round and firm and can be found on the penis, in the vagina, or external genitalia. They can also be found on the anus or in the mouth.
