Siouxland District Health Department and SIMPCO are partnering with Woodbury County communities to help create more walkable and bikeable communities.
Walkable communities lead to more social interaction, physical fitness, diminished crime, and increased wellness, addressing many social and economic problems. Walkable communities lead to happy and healthy lives for the people who live in them and they attract young adults, families, children and grandchildren to the area.
Walkability assessments have been completed in Sioux City, Sergeant Bluff, Moville and Lawton. Improvements such as adding adequate signage, removing brush over sidewalks, painting visible crosswalks, adding curb ramps, adding trails and sidewalk connections and providing bicycle parking have been completed. Improvements were funded by the communities themselves and/or through various grants.
